AWE INSPIRINGJanuary 4, 2009 THE THOUGHT THAT I COULD HAVE MISSED THIS GEM SADDENS ME, BECAUSE MY USUAL READS ARE WAY DIFFERENT TO THIS BOOK.I WILL WATCH THE NEWS WITH COMPLETELY DIFFERENT EYES NOW. EVERYONE I TALK TO NOW I HAVE TO TELL THEM "YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK" SO THEY TOO CAN GO INTO THE TRAGIC WORLD OF MARIAM A FIFTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL IN WAR TORN AFGHANISTAN. YOU CAN SEE THE COLOURS, FEEL THE PAIN OF ALL THE CHARACTERS,THE LOVE STORY THAT RUNS THROUGH THIS BOOK LEAVES YOU WANTING MORE AT THE END, A BEAUTIFUL READ AS SIMPLE AS THAT!
The best read in agesJanuary 4, 2009 A Thousand Splendid Suns I have just read this 400+words book and savoured every word. What a fantastic storyteller Hosseini is. At the end of every chapter, I wanted to read the next as they flow into each other. It is a beautifully told story of love, war, injustices to women and a world that is totally unfamiliar to me - a Westerner. I learned so much from it. I can't wait to get my hands on his first book now, 'The Kite Runner.'
I thought Kite Runner was good, this is even betterDecember 30, 2008 This is a heart rending tale of two women living through the political anarchy of Afghanistan over the last fifty years. We in the west should hang our heads in shame for the part we have played in this nightmare. I thought Kite Runner was excellent but it is a pale shadow set against this beautifully crafted tale. You engage 100% with the characters and their impossible lives. I challenge you not to be moved to tears through parts of this book. The abuse they accept as part of their daily lives is made commonplace in this environment. The injustice of it all, the shameless chauvanism of the men - beyond arrogance. This book changes perspectives and, believe me, they need changing!!
A fabulous follow up to the Kite RunnerDecember 30, 2008 If you had read the Kite Runner, you would have been left emotionally exhausted but exhilarated by the beautiful style of writing by Khaled Hosseni. So, when his 2nd book was released, you would be forgiven for thinking that nothing would match KR. However, A Thousand Splendid Suns is a fabulous book, written so wonderfully that you are there, in Afghanistan, with Miriam, the leading lady of the story, taking every twist and turn with her through her life. Another book which tugs at the heart strings but gives everyone an insight, as did KR, to how life in such countries can be. It is a book which will thrill you and I betcha won't be able to put it down!!! p.s. A Thousand Splendid Suns is not a sequel to Kite Runner - which is also a must read.
I wish the story could last foreverDecember 20, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book was recommended to me by friends. I finally bought it when I became stressed on my teaching practice course. I wanted to escape and I truly did by reading this book. You really get involved with the characters and gain a lot of insight into the culture. The only problem with this book that I found was the fact that it was so addictive. I liked it so much that I found I was reading it when I knew I was supposed to be studying. It is beautifully written and the story is so compelling and real. Hosseini is a great writer and the way the book is constructed is amazing. All his techniques really work. Simply a magical story and a must read.
