Amazon.co.uk Review The Cat in the Hat is a marketing ploy disguised as a wildly designed movie for hyperactive kids, and it could use a dose of Ritalin. It hardly matters, though, because kids will surely enjoy the rampant romp that occurs when the top-hatted feline convinces young Sally (Dakota Fanning) and Conrad (Spencer Breslin) to wreak havoc in the home their mother (Kelly Preston) has neatly prepared for an upcoming party. It's all in the name of fun, and while Seuss's classic rhymes are relegated to voice-over narration, director Bo Welch capitalizes on his background as one of Hollywood's most gifted production designers (with credits including Edward Scissorhands and Men in Black), turning the Seussian town of "Anville" into a playful pastiche of pastels. As played by Mike Myers under layers of fur and latex, Dr. Seuss's mischievous Cat is mayhem personified, and the movie suffers from his anything-goes approach to getting a laugh. And though Myers delivers a few laughs while channeling voices from his own comedic repertoire (including "Coffee Talk" maven Linda Richman), a little of this Cat goes a long way, and he nearly wears out his welcome. --Jeff Shannon

Even better than the Spongebob Squarepants Movie! October 19, 2007 I had such low expectations of this film, because everyone had told me it was just a bit naff and silly. Yes! It is naff and silly, but in the best way as physically possible! This is one of greatest children's films ever made, just over taking the Spongebob Squarepants Movie. Other reviewers have said it's 'very good, FOR CHILDREN!' - What Goofy Goobers! - Of coarse! It's a movie FOR CHILDREN! (It's not that hard to guess, being called 'The Cat In The Hat') What do they think! It's going to be some kind of super violent adults gangster movie? Anyway, point made.
It tells the story of Conrad and Sally, their mum is a workaholic with a slimy cheese ball for a boyfriend, and one dull rainy day, shows up does the Cat In The Hat! From then, the film twists wildly out of control as the Cat attempts to cheer them up and just have fun! It includes some very close-to-the-edge gags and moments for a kid's movie, which is the main thing I love about this movie: it's not afraid to do something a bit different. Evolving from a book by Dr. Seuss, I also love the way in which the film's sets are created; they're kind of perfectly in the middle of cartoon and realism consistently, awarding to itself a fair amount of artistic merit.
Fab film for anybody who loves a good laugh. Highly recommend it to everyone, especially people who need a bit of cheering up. If this movie does not make you at least chuckle, go straight down to the nearest hospital, because you may possibly be dead! Love it! Love it! Love it! Smile!
We love it January 29, 2007 I bought this film for my 3 year old daughter she likes cats & hats, so i thought why not.) I watched it with her not expecting much after seeing the rather poor T'he Grinch' I loved it as much as she did, very funny excellent sets and acting, mike myers is very well cast as the cat and alec baldwing is excellent as the evil boyfriend, imagine a cross between austin powers, waynes world wraped up in fantastic costumes and sets and your about there. my daughter has watched it 9 times in 48 hours...........
really fun December 28, 2006 Kids especially would love this movie! It's really colorful and fun to watch. I am past being a child now, but i really did enjoy this movie. It may seem way too young for a lot of people however. But well worth watching, and especially if you have young ones too.
A so-so adaptation of the Dr Seuss classic October 18, 2006 I rented this movie earlier in the year and it was watchable yet coulourful. Some of the jokes were funny, especially the one about the babysitter but I wasn't too keen on the "Dirty hoe" pun.
It was strange seeing Mike Myers dressed up as a cat but he did have a very good lead role. There are some downsides with this film such as some of it that isn't like the book and the children's over the top screaming when they first saw the Cat.
There are some good parts in this film such as the purple liquid down a slide and the animated versions of the Universal and Dreamworks logos. The part that is most like the book is when the Cat and some others enter the house with a special cleaning machine.
If there was a rating out of 10, I'd give this film a 7, otherwise I give it a 3/5.
Great for the CHILDREN. October 18, 2005 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
To most adults this film will seem like a solid piece of farce, but to easy-to-please children and the odd adult, this film is a rollercoaster of fun! It is about a cat in a hat who arrives at the feet of Conrad and Sally (Dakota Fanning and Spencer Breslin), two young children who NEED a bit of fun in their boring predictable afternoon. And they get it. With Conrad the constant trouble-maker, Sally the strict and over-sensible ten year-old, and a cat in a hat, the day unfolds one problem after the other but ensures lots of fun! Even Paris Hilton pops up at one point!
