Good Book on the SpeciesJune 9, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Herbert Axelrod has arguably done more for the hobby of tropical fish-keeping than any other person and his trips seeking out new species have been going on for some time. The TFH books work to a tried and tested formula and they are ideal for anyone who is interested in tropical fish and trying to breed them. The only slight criticism is that some of the equipment shown is of course American in origin and cannot always be found in England, but equally good alternatives are usually available.
The book although small in volume is large in stature and gives the potential keeper and breeder of these beautiful fish virtually everything they need to know to make a success of a breeding programme. Even if you only want to keep these fish for their beauty rather than trying to breed them, the book is well worth having.
If you do fancy trying angels, be aware that they are not really suitable for the community aquarium, although many people do keep them in this environment. Angels belong the cichlid family and will eat anything that will fit into their mouths, smaller fish included. Also they are one of the few fishes that usually grow deeper than they are long, so a deep tank is certainly preferable if not essential. Having said all that they are among the most beautiful of the tropical freshwater fish. Many fish look their best and have the deepest colours when they are juveniles but angels almost always look better when they are adult.
