Marginal HandJune 22, 2006 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book would be far more useful if it concentrated on one form of poker, preferably one that people have heard of. It's quite difficult to understand a princple if it's explained in terms of a game like London Lowball! As it is the message if very much diffused by the obscure references.
If this book were a hold'em hand it would be 8,7 - maybe suited.
Essential for serious poker playersSeptember 1, 2005 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
In the UK we play a LOT of pot-limit. Bob knows what he's talking about and has greatly improved my game. This is not a beginners book. If you have played pot limit or no-limit for reasonable money (in a B&M situation) and been left in a cold sweat (as I have many a time) then you'll appreciate this book. I rate books by personal dollar value, and next to Skalnsky's poker for advanced players, this is second on my all time list (tops super system)
OK, but too much jargon and examples using obscure gamesAugust 29, 2005 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book is a bit of an enigma. Some of the concepts make perfect sense and are well explained, others make very little sense in the descriptions and the examples used to describe them come from some very obscure games that I had real problems even finding the rules for! If you have read the better known books and are looking to further your knowledge, then there are some things in here that I haven't found elsewhere, but it is by no means essential reading. I don't think my poker playing materially improved after reading this, which is the whole point of buying these books really. If you haven't read 'Harrington on Hold em', 'Super System' or 'Theory of Poker' then go for these first
THE Essential Big Bet Poker BookNovember 11, 2003 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
If you want to understand Big Bet Poker buy this book. It is easy to read but hard to absorb and will take weeks if not months to understand everything in this book. You would lose thousands of dollars at the poker table before you figured out all the information contained in this book. The book assumes you are a pretty established Poker Player already, if not most of the information will go over your head. It is the best Treatise on Big Bet Poker available, if you are serious about Poker I would recommend buying it in conjunction with Super/System and The Theory of Poker
Doesn't hit any marketAugust 15, 2003 7 out of 19 found this review helpful
This book is probably aimed at experienced big-bet players, not people looking to move up from limit. Having read this you will not sit down at a pot-limit table with much more of an idea of what to expect or how to play your hands. It's all general, e.g. "how to beat the bully". Also I suspect a decent big-bet player will learn little as it is probably pretty basic stuff for an experienced player. Don't take my word for that though.
