5 out of 5 stars Inspirational reading for those raising a puppy   April 8, 2007

Just before our third German Shorthaired Pointer puppy was to arrive in our home, I decided to buy "The art of raising a puppy". I have thoroughly enjoyed reading it and find it to be an inspiration to make sure we do things right. The book is well written and easy to read. Particularly the chapters on crate training, early grooming and socializing I have found to be very useful but the book is full of little treasures and has helped all of us understanding our pup much better than we thought possible. Our pup "Fritz" is now eleven weeks old and the advice from the monks thus far has proven to be invaluable! We also have "How to be your dog's best friend" and the "Raising your dog with the monks of New Skete" DVD (ISBN 0-9656417-1-6). The DVD is great and helps my family members who aren't into reading to raise our pup the "New Skete" way! Yes, the monks are monks but their religious beliefs are never pushed down the readers' throats. Their style and philosophy however is pleasant and inspiring. I can't recommend it highly enough!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant for the Dominant Dog   July 31, 2003

This book is fantastic for raising a dominant pup; I would however offer a word of caution to those with a sensitive puppy, as some of the methods used in disciplining could result in emotional distress resulting in behaviour problems such as submissive urination. The book is FULL of the most helpful information from crate training and house training to the insight into your dog’s life from the very beginning. With that out the way I will say as a behaviourist this is one of the best books on puppy training I have ever read. I also recommend reading the first book written by the monks 'How to be your dogs best friend'. I have recommended this book to so many of my clients that it has reduced expected behaviour problems from occurring, dramatically. These books not only teach you how to train your puppy but how to look through their eyes, understand and really build an unbreakable bond.

Highly recommended for anyone thinking about getting a dog (puppy or not) I've had dogs for years and found this book revealing, informative, full of great ideas and insights.

5 out of 5 stars the best book on dog raising I've seen   August 22, 1999

This is the very best book on raising dogs I've ever read. It is enjoyable and interesting, as well as very informative. I highly recommend it as good reading, even if you are not presently interested in getting a puppy. The monks provide fascinating insights into dog training. Look at their other books also.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for new buyers, trainers, & breeders!   July 28, 1999

The breeder we bought our german shepherd puppy from recommended this book to us. I am amazed at the work the Monks of New Skete are doing for the german shepherd breed. My hope is that all breeders would use the New Skete method with their litters. If this were done, then maybe so-called "dangerous breeds" would lose their bad rap. Surely there would be less dogs in animal shelters and pet shops.

I can not stress enough the importance of early human socialization, and the Monks of New Skete seem to agree. If you are planning on breeding a litter, I urge you to pick up this book an heed the authors advice.

This book also stresses humane training methods, and the importance of positive reinforcement. Using this method has helped with my dominant GSD pup. Constant scolding will get you nowhere. A quick pop on the lead when bad and copious amounts of praise when good makes training a happy occasion for both dog and master.

I would recommend the three tape training set "Raising Your Dog With The Monks of New Skete" along with this book. The tapes show the New Skete method from the puppy birth, to training the adult dog, and brings the information together nicely.
