4 out of 5 stars Good background guide to clicker training   November 26, 2006

I was interested in the concept of clicker training and wanted to know a little more about it, so bought this book as a starting point. What a good buy! It covers the history and ideas behind clicker training in an easy-to-understand way, and points you in the right direction to get started yourself (although it isn't a guide on how to train lots of different behaviours, it's simply a starting point to help you understand the ideas behind the clicker).

If you're interested in finding out a little more about clicker training and aren't quite sure where to start, I'd start here!

5 out of 5 stars forget Barbara Woodhouse - this is easy!   July 14, 2005

It's so easy! My eight week old Gordon Setter (not renowned for being the most obedient breed on the planet) could sit and down in one evening - amazing! I now have a very easy going, laid back, obedient (yes, an obedient setter!!) dog and most of all a pleasure to live with. Try it, it's easy and this is the book to tell you all about it - although I have to say I also bought the DVD which made it even more understandable.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent ! A two day transformation   September 4, 2002

This is a well written, informative step by step guide to the subject. An detailed introduction to the system behind this both reassures and gives a clear understanding of its origins (dolphins!)

Following clear instructions, our weimeraner and border collie dogs were soon 'performing' and responding with three short sessions on one day. Amazingly they remembered this the nextday and progressed further.
The treat/reward soon becomes irrelevant as the anticipation produces results. A truly incredible system. Indeed I'm already thinking of 'Flyball'...
The book is nicely printed wit informative photographs which add to the text rather than repeat itself. A little on the large print side however and is written leaving a sequel a certainty. It does not try to cover too much ground and leaves you with the feeling that yo could develop further skills unassisted.

Strongly recommend this to even sceptics of the clicker . It converted us!!and the dogs

3 out of 5 stars Excellent content, but very over-priced   November 20, 2001

Karen Pryor's books have all been fantastic and this one is a great introduction for clicker training puppies and older dogs. It gives clear instructions as to how to go about getting the dog to associate the click with a reward. Also includes how to clicker train the basic commands such as sit, lie, come etc and gives very clear instructions on how to stop/prevent your dog from pulling on her lead (we are still working on this one!).

However, I read this book in under an hour - it really is not much more than a large leaflet..it is not good value for money. Try reading 'don't shoot the dog'also by the same author, instead.
