Not very impressedJuly 16, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this book, entitled "Grow Your Pup with Bones" expecting to find a comprehensive guide to feeding my puppy. What it is a comprehensive guide to WHY you should feed your puppy raw. All very well and good but there is one scant chapter on actually HOW to feed your puppy and then it says, "for more information read Chapter 17 'Feeding Your New Puppy' in Give Your Dog A Bone!! The cheek! I don't expect to buy a book for 23 that is supposed to deal exclusively with feeding a puppy only to be told to go and buy another over-priced book to find out the information that should have been contained in this book!
Your dog will thank you.July 28, 2006 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Whereas "Give your dog a Bone" is about the BARF diet in general, this book very much deals with the nutrition and care of puppies - from antenatal into adulthood. Once again, Mr Billinghurst is a tad repetitive, but it does get the point home. His advice is sound and thorough, from feeding and nutrition to exercise, and it does force you to question the commercial pet food industry and how it brainwashes our newly trained vets. It helps you to see that what is perhaps convenient and "tasteful" for us, is not good for our dogs. The section on bone diseases is heavy going, but sound, glaringly obvious and frightening. My 17 week old pup munches happily on her food as do my older dogs. She is calm and full of energy, lean and strong. I would NEVER go back to commercial foods even if I was paid.
This book is a mustApril 27, 2004 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
If you have a pup and are contemplating a BARF diet this book is a mustand a great addition to any library. If you have one of the larger breedespically a gaint(like me) give them best chance of a fantastic long lifewith the help of this book. The only fault I found with this book isBillinghurst did not publish his refernces ( As Lonsdeal did in Raw MeatyBones). I personally would like to be able to corss referance some of thestudies that he mentions.
A must for any dog breederNovember 8, 2000 35 out of 38 found this review helpful
I read this book after putting my three Airedale Terriers on the BARF diet with amazing results. This book goes into more detail of the problems caused by inappropriate feeding of our dogs, ie on commercial dog food. I found the chapter on hip dysplasia particularly informative and interesting. I wish more breeders would listen to Dr Billinghurst and his unique approach to dog nutrition. Most people feed their pups and bitches on tried and tested means and on advice from their vet, this book tells you all the things the vets don't. I know many dog breeders and I will certainly recommend they read this book. Excellent, read for yourself!
